The Most Rewarding Family Adventure Travel Experience in Costa Rica

AppId is over the quota

Getting to Tortuguero National Park is quite an adventure! Tortuguero National Park lies on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, and though we had heard that it features an incredible variety of wildlife in a near-jungle setting, we were going for the main attraction - to see turtles nesting their eggs along the coastline.

To this end, we headed south. We began our trip to Tortuguero with an incredible drive through the mountains and farm lands replete with banana fields. Our real adventure began shortly after reaching Puerto Limon, the capital town of Limon Province. Little did we know that from here on, a spectacular trip awaited us?

There are no roads to Tortuguero, so we took the only possible route - boating through the lush canals. This was part of the adventure. A near 2 hour boat trip lead us through the Canal de Tortuguero and through some stunning rainforests at the banks of the swamps. Shortly after pushing off the dock, a crocodile caught our attention. The kids were especially excited as he was just a bit too close for comfort. Competing with the crocodile, Howler and Spider monkeys were staging a noisy show in the treetops. A sloth flaunted his cuddly koala-like side. There were turtles and birds of every variety - egrets, herons and toucans flying overhead. At every bend in the river, a surprise awaited us. As there is no human settlement, nature truly dominates here.

As we neared Tortuguero town, the rainforest gave way to expansive white beaches, the perfect nesting ground for the sea turtles. Tortuguero National Park was created to protect and preserve its turtle residents - Green Sea Turtles, Hawksbill, Leatherback and Loggerheads. On our own in the afternoon, we explored tiny Tortuguero town, a truly magical little village. There are no cars here, only bikes and boats. Walking paths extend through the village and into the National Park. We started out on a self-guided walk through the Los Raudales Nature Trail to reach a scenic point of magnificent vistas - the azure ocean, the near-blinding white beaches and the sight of waves crashing against the rocks.

The next morning we chose to take a guided ecotour through the park's canals. Tortuguero National Park hosts a network of stunning black water canals where we spotted all kinds of monkeys and other birds, as well as an abundance of marine life. Our guide pointed out the sloths, spider and capuchin monkeys which would have been lost to us among the thick foliage. We spotted a large iguana nearly dropping from a tree precariously, and a Jesus lizard, famous for its ability to run on the water. Cruising through the canals covered completely by the canopy of the rainforest, the plant and animal life found here is unimaginable.

In the evening, we were all especially excited, anticipating our turtle nesting walk. To the waning moon and in complete darkness, we made our way, single file, to the beach. The sounds of crashing waves and the smell of salt in the humid air gave evidence to our direction in the black night. The dimmed red light of our guide led the way, as the sand gave way under us.

Suddenly a huge Green Sea Turtle loomed ahead, its sheer size impressive. Unaware of our presence, the turtle inhaled and with every exhale, it laid between 2-4 bluish eggs. It seems these turtles lay between 200-300 eggs at a time, but very few survive. After dropping the eggs, the turtles hide the eggs in the sand. The sight of this natural process which has been going on for thousands of years was incredible to witness. For the kids especially it was an experience which left them with their mouths agape.

On our final morning, we clambered up Tortuguero Island Mountain with our guide, where we saw rubber trees, strangler trees, bright red poison dart frogs, a cave of vampire bats and termite labyrinth. We learned about natural rainforest healing plants and took in the whole of this magnificent island.

Tortuguero is Costa Rica's breathtaking jungle. A trip here is a not-too-be-missed adventure into a min-Amazon.

Making a Family Vacation Educational and Still Fun

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Now I have two little girls and I am going to tell you that I love taking them on vacation. I love exploring new things and watching them experience something fun and completely new to them. When I first started being so fascinated in taking them places for vacation I started with just the normal stuff. When I say normal stuff I mean things like theme parks and stuff like that. But then one day I asked myself "what if I could make this whole vacation experience something that really taught my girls something.

With that intention I started searching for fun things to do that were also educational. I had what I feel, as becoming pretty successful at helping my family have a great time and learn a few things so I wanted to share some of those ideas with you.

One thing I do is go to the information center in any city we visit. At the information center you will find all kinds of normal vacation stuff, but I guarantee within all that normal vacation stuff you will find something either history or science related. You know like an old house that was around during the civil war that has a bunch history or a hands on science kind of place that the kids would really enjoy.

So I grab the brochures that have to do with either topic and I get out my tablet computer. Ok, if you don't have a some kind of tablet computer or lap top computer then all you have to is go to the local library and use their computers. Or you can check at your hotel. Between those options its almost impossible to not find some kind of internet connection. Well, that's my experience anyway.

Your next step is to do a little research on the history site or the science focused vacation spot. Now you might be thinking, what if they don't have any information on the internet about that history site or science center. Well don't worry. If you can't find anything directly on it. All you have to do is search the specific time frame of the history or the general topics covered in the science place. When you do that click on google video search. Then watch some of the videos with the kids. Then take personal note of the information in the videos. When you do that you can find all kinds of things to relate the experience you have at the locations with the videos. My experience has been every time when I do this is seeing excited little eyes that are having a blast and really learning. And when I say learning something I am talking from a deeper experience you don't get in a class room.

Ranthambore National Park - Pictorial Ruins Amidst Wildlife

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Ranthambore Park, a chief tiger reserve today, once served to be the hunting grounds for the maharajas of Jaipur. Apart from tiger, Ranthambore wildlife boasts of its chital (spotted deer) and sambar (largest deer of India) population. Additionally, the reserves show offs a large sphere of rich and varied flora and fauna. An important feature of this park is that the Vindhaya plateau runs into the Aravali range here. It is hugged by the River Chambal on its South and River Banas in its North. Once you begin exploring this park, you will come across steep rocky hills, dry deciduous forest, lakes and rivers and open grassy meadows.

Safari rides inside the park are precisely regulated and the entry of private vehicles is restricted. A reservation for a safari ride has to be made in advance with the Forest Department. The chances of spotting a tiger are good, but plan about two or three safaris if you really want to see a tiger. Even if a tiger is not spotted, the ride through the park is worth for its scenic beauty alone. It is a rare chance to wander amidst such a huge region of virgin bush in India. Do not miss it! Ranthambore India tourism runs 3 hours safari trips everyday.

You must capture the unique green patches in your camera while you are in the Ranthambore National Park. Bring along with you 400 or 800 ASA films, since the undergrowth in the park is very dense and dark in places. The prime time for finest photography is March and April, when the reserve is at its best. If you want real good pictures, opt for a jeep safari instead of canters. Keep some warm clothes along side, you may need them during a morning safari. Some jungle guides suggest that the park visitors must avoid wearing bright colors as they often tend to irritate the tiger. You must be well prepared for a jungle safari. Bring a mosquito repellent, a cap and a bottle of water, specifically in October and November.

During you Ranthambore National Park tour, savor the experience of staying in a tent house. There are some luxurious tent houses outside the reserve, which are equipped with all the necessary facilities. These tents have an over sized bed, dining table, attached bathrooms and dressing sections. Stay in them to experience raw base camping without any compromise on ease and comfort.

The Ranthambore National Park remains open for tourists from the first week of October until the end of June. November to February is best time for visitors who find it difficult to deal with high temperature. For more info about Rajasthan Tour Visit us.

Yarra Valley Events - Healesville Railway Heritage, Cuban Jazz and Other Festivals

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Yarra Valley events are not just about wine-tasting affairs and food festivals. The happenings in this spectacular vacation destination in Victoria also involve the country's arts, culture and heritage. Among those that draw locals and tourists alike are the Annual Healesville Railway Heritage Festival, Yarra Valley Open Studios, and jazz concerts.

The Healesville Railway Heritage Festival is a two-day event held every year mainly to showcase the legacy of the Healesville Railway Station, which was the terminal of the Healesville railway line built in 1903. It was recently restored to become the principal station of the Yarra Valley Tourist Railway and is now listed in Heritage Victoria. Displayed during this festival are heritage train rides, steam road engines, vintage cars and trucks, blacksmiths, paper making, and other exhibits taking pride in the area's industry in the early 1900s.

Another entry in the winemaking region's calendar that promotes its heritage is the Run Walk Ride community event. It features the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail that includes the bridge over the Maroondah Highway and other trail linkages. Participants can choose to run, walk or ride to visit the historic railway stations along the whole 39-km trail. Prizes, giveaways and community activities are prepared for everyone joining.

The Yarra Valley Open Studios, on the other hand, is a venue where artists of the region welcome visitors to view their life and works for two weekends every year. This year, 45 artists will participate in the exhibit. Also, showing the visitors how visual arts and winemaking are perfectly married in this famous vintners' district, the featured event of the year is the group exhibition in the barrel room of Sticks Winery.

In addition, jazz festivals are Yarra Valley events that are always well-attended by both locals and tourists. One of these is the Summer Jazz at Seville Hill, an annual celebration of fine wine and music. The Seville Hill Winery opens its doors to guests who'd like to enjoy jazz, wine and some gourmet dishes and chill out during the warm nights from late September to early April. In addition, Wine Quest's Cuban Jazz is another hit among the glen's guests. Cuban bands, salsa dance lessons, percussions, wine, and food are all set up to create the vineyard vibe at the Rochford Winery. These and more liven up the famous acres of Victoria, especially during the summer.

So, if you're one of those who think that Yarra Valley events are just all wines and food, check out the calendar of this famous region of Victoria for some music, visual arts, heritage, and cultural experiences like no other.

Enjoy Yarra Valley events all throughout the year. Visit Experience Yarra Valley for the region's calendar of exciting events, list of enchanting accommodations, and selection of tours that will help you enjoy the destination even more.

Voices From Our Travels - Putre, Chile

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

While looking out over a massive mineral deposit (A scarred gorge that looks like it has been eaten out of the arid Andean altiplano by acid) you will notice one thing above all else: silence. You were brought here by Justino Jiron who found this place some years ago while exploring new tracks through the virtually inaccessible back country of Vicuna National Reserve, one of three marvelous parks contained in the UNESCO Biosphere reserve. Justino, born and raised here at Chile's northern tip, started Tour Andino. He will tell you that he was the first guide to take travelers through Putre - but only the first of many.

Isolated adobe towns, smoking volcanoes, high altitude lakes, wildlife spotting, salt flats, geysers and hot springs are all within the bounds of the three contiguous parks strung along the Bolivian border just a short drive inland. Infrastructure is less comprehensive here, and navigating the dirt tracks is nearly impossible without a guide. The payoff of extraordinary vistas and total solitude makes the difficult trek worth it.

Putre has learned a lesson or two from its neighbor to the south. Tourism hit San Pedro with the sudden power of the volcanic eruptions that shaped the landscape millennia ago. In a matter of a few short years the town's handfuls of narrow lanes were flooded with hostels and tour operators. Residents of Putre, mostly descendants of the reserved Aymara indigenous people, are reluctant to see their town go the same way, despite the opportunities for economic gain associated with the growth of tourism. Thus, while the town now has an ATM, several good restaurants, and a range of accommodations, it remains the quiet adobe village it has always been, isolated high in the mountains, at the doorstep for the breathless plain that runs from northern Chile as far as the Bolivian city of La Paz.

The few accommodation options within the parks - one or two simple hostels in the slowly revitalizing town of Parinacota, and several park service refugios - are extremely basic, but within the town of Putre one or two more luxurious options have made this rustic village a hospitable destination for rugged adventurers who enjoy being pampered once in a while.

One of these is the Biosphere Responsible Tourism-certified Terrace Lodge, a small group of adobe-style buildings on a short bluff just a minute's walk from the main square. Small, but very comfortable rooms here are simply decorated using regional handicrafts, and in the quiet, solar-powered dining room the Italian owners prepare dishes from their homeland - a welcome break from the meat and potatoes the preponderate in altiplano cuisine.

A trip to Putre will likely begin in the Chilean coastal city of Arica, also the border post for southern Peru. From here, a stunning three-hour bus ride climbs into the Andes to reach Putre, which sits 11,400 ft (3,500 m) above sea level. Give yourself a couple of days to acclimate to the altitude before pushing on to the dizzying heights of Lauca and the Surire salt flat, both set around 14,000 ft above sea level. To organize your trip, contact Tour Andino for tours through the parks or volcano trekking (don't expect luxury; do expect careful attention and a unique glimpse of the region), or the Terrace Lodge for accommodation in Putre.

Uganda and Rwanda safaris are not often thought of in an ornithological context, however, a new website - Birding Uganda - has just been launched in Uganda, which spells good news for twitchers and will hopefully uncover a whole new world of discovery for anyone with an ounce of enthusiasm for birds.

Uganda or Rwanda safaris should always include a spot of bird watching. Uganda for example, has over 1,000 species, making it one of the richest birding destinations in Africa. Rwanda is not far behind and Nyungwe Forest - one of the largest protected high altitude forests on the continent - is a birder's paradise, with avian highlights such as the rare and stunning Sunbirds and the black and white casqued Hornbill, not to mention all its Albertine Rift endemics.

Just about anywhere in either country is bound to abound with birds, even within the hustle and bustle of Kampala and Kigali; in fact, in Kampala alone, you can expect to see close to 300 different species.

Uganda's'Big 5 Bird Species' include:

• Shoebill - a prehistoric, rarely seen bird, which looks rather like a cross between a pelican and a stork. Preferred habitat: swamps

• African Green Broadbill - this beautiful bird is endemic to the Albertine Rift, and has occasionally been spotted in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Its call is a high-pitched hissing rhythmical series that sound like sii-sii-sii-siiiiiii...

• Green-breasted Pitta - most likely to be spotted at dawn or dusk, this is a shiny bird that prefers to inhabit forests.

• African Finfoot - These birds are water birds, although they spend much of their time on riverbanks. African Finfoots have distinctive red bills.

• Great Blue Turaco - Turacos can be seen in urban and rural settings and are distinctive for their 'lipstick' beaks and vivid blue bodies.

So, if you are planning some Uganda or Rwanda safaris, make sure to include some birding... and here are a few tips if you do!

• Try to remember as many bird calls as possible and listen out for birdsong

• Keep a record of field notes

• Stay well away from nesting sites and roosts and keep habitat disturbance in general to a minimum

• Never approach too closely and keep sight times to a minimum with rare and endangered birds

• Take notes and sketches and buy a good field guide

• And of course, ALL budding birdwatchers should invest in a good pair of binoculars!

Don't forget of course that on any trip to Uganda or Rwanda, it's not only about the birds... You will also find a large supporting cast of mammals, including the big cats, elephants, giraffes, hippos and warthogs, as well as an abundance of primates. In fact Uganda and Rwanda safaris are best known for their jungle excursions to the mountain gorillas' habitats or a trek through entwined vines, bush and bamboo to the forested refuges of the Chimpanzees. But either way, don't forget to save some space on your itinerary for our two-winged friends; you won't be disappointed...

More About Diani Beach Safaris In Kenya

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Diani beach safaris can be pleasurable if they are planned carefully. Diani beach is found in Kenya along the Indian Ocean shoreline. It receives numerous visitors every year because of many reasons. First, Diani is a white sand shore accentuated by tall palm trees and blue Indian Ocean waters. It is also known for its Coral reefs that encourage snorkeling activities. This popular beach is situated to the south of the larger Mombasa Island. It covers twenty five kilometers of land and there are other shorelines situated on the same strip of land.

The other two beaches include Tiwi and Galu while the islands include Funzi and Chale. If you want a beach holiday, you could come to the Kenyan coastline anytime. Diani's climate is relaxing and warm throughout the year just like the rest of the Kenya's coast province. The calm breezes that flow at the shores help reduce the tropical heat common in this part of the country. If you want to enjoy the hottest weather, come between December and April months. The temperatures can rise up to thirty-one degrees Celsius in the day.

If you want to come to Diani beach during the cooler months, you should plan a trip between July and August. The temperatures are about twenty-seven degrees Celsius, meaning that the region's weather is still warm. The rainy season is between April and May every year. Now that you know a few details about this shore, you should start planning a trip. The easiest method of planning a tour is through a travel operator that is mandated to operate in Kenya. You can avoid doing a comprehensive research about the geography of Mombasa and surrounding beaches as well as the best areas to live in.

Luckily, today, you can use the internet to find a good tour and guide company that operates in the entire country. Remember that you need to travel around country as well and you need to use a travel partner that offers reliable safaris from Diani beach. A few days spent at this shore opens plenty of activities and fun for everyone. Watersports are quite common especially windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling and kite flying. With over twenty diving sites, you can enjoy a unique opportunity to learn how to dive in case you do not know how to do it. If you specifically want to relax, you could try golfing or yoga classes. For the visitors that like to learn new languages and traditions, the locals can teach Swahili language and share their cultures and traditions.

Many travel companies offer daily excursions where guests are taken for guided walks or bike rides. To share your experiences with your beloved ones you can access the internet or call them using a local phone service. Access to your money is easier because the Diani shopping complex features around six banks, one of them being Barclays, an international bank. Shopping local stuff including jewelry and other souvenirs can easily be done at the beach or near your resort. Diani beach safaris are not limited to this region only, since your travel partner can take you around the country if you want.

Why A Family Safari Is More Than Just A Holiday For Your Kids

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

A good safari operator will know a thing or two about what families want from their trip and also that the luxury safaris they offer are the best way for a family to enjoy Africa together.

Perfect for the enquiring minds of the young and young at heart, a safari opens up a whole world of wonder to all the family. This is going to be the holiday that they talk about for years to come, the photos that come out time and again long after those pictures from the Costas have been forgotten.

In the spectacular and wild environment of unspoiled Africa there is something for every member of the family to be fascinated and awed by. If you find a good tour provider, they know what their families need on safari holidays and will be able to match you with exactly the right family orientated lodge for your stay. Find lodges that are not the type of lodge or camp that will accept children yet tut about them under their breath, truly family friendly lodges with staff that know exactly how to make even the youngest visitors holiday memorable are the ones to find.

While Africa wants to welcome everyone to their safaris, it is true to to say that families with small babies and toddlers should probably wait a few years before they come, to make sure that everyone really appreciates the very special holiday that an African safari is. Long drives and waiting quietly for game to appear are not always well received by the youngest amongst us! With younger children it is also wise to avoid the malarial regions. There are many reasons why a family safari is more than just a holiday for your kids. Africa is a huge classroom and without even knowing it your children will absorb information and develop an appreciation for nature and the environment as easily as they soak up the warm rays of the African sun.

A wild tour of Africa will offer much more to your children than just a holiday. Many of the safari lodges that are recommend have specialist family safari guides who know just how to make sure children get the most from their days. From bush treasure hunts to African bedtime story tellers, this will truly be a magical holiday of discovery and new experiences for your young ones. And if you need a little 'adult time' then you can leave the children in the capable hands of experienced children's guides and childminders.

Ask why family safaris are more than just a holiday for your kids? Because Africa, a land as old as time, is waiting to welcome you to a vast wilderness where you and your children can feel as though you are the first ever to see the sun set over the African horizon. Create a family safari throughout Namibia and The Cape region of South Africa, Botswana and Zambia or even East Africa. But wherever you choose to go, know one thing. You will be back! And Africa will be here to welcome you.

AppId is over the quota

Higher education is a great way to further yourself before you set off on your chosen career path. Many people consider gap years between their college or university courses in order to gain valuable life experience before stepping out into reality and facing the world of work. Many choose to take on gap year expeditions which can involve travelling anywhere across the world, taking part in community conservation projects or simply taking part in a trekking expedition or an exploration of a region. It wholly depends upon your personal interests, whether it be experiencing a foreign country, climbing mountains and reaching summits or volunteering in a third world country - the opportunities of a gap year expedition are endless.

A vast number are keen to take on some volunteer work as part of their Gap Year expedition. The regions in which you can join and take part in projects are wide ranging and varied. From North and South America, Africa, Asia and even parts of Europe, the choice is completely yours and any trustworthy, reliable gap year expeditions company will endeavour to help you plan and devise an itinerary for your trip. You could find yourself helping to improve local facilities like building playgrounds and assisting in construction work or even simply helping local populaces with the building of houses and improving local amenities. Many find such expeditions very worthwhile given the life experience you will gain along with confidence and other attributes like leadership and social skills.

Others may be interested in the more physically enduring side of adventure expeditions like trekking and climbing. Some trekking companies offer trips to countries like Iceland for trekking expeditions which last around 4 days and take you across the famous Hot Springs found in the region. Other trips can involve treks through the Amazon Rainforest and other exotic locations. You can get involved as an individual but it's definitely worth getting a group together if you are serious about taking on gap year expeditions. Ideas For African Vacations

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There are many destinations and adventures that await with African vacations. Africa in probably the most diverse continent for variations in wildlife, bird species, and cultures in the world, the second being Australia and New Zealand. Here the continent of Africa has devoted vast tracks of land to National Parks, and wildlife preserves, with some of these being as large if not bigger than Texas and Alaska. Countries such as Botswana, Tanzani, South Africa, and Kenya, devoting their time and efforts to the conservation and preservation of wildlife. There are many different endangered and threatened species that owe their salvation to these people.

You can find many different types of African Vacations to choose from. There are adventures in Egypt, where you can experience not only the Great Pyramids, but also travel down the Nile, as well as many other sites in this country. There are African Safaris of all different kinds, with guided adventures through some of this continents most beautiful wonders. You can participate in an Eco-safari, where you can not only see much of the wildlife, but also have a once in a life time opportunity to live and learn about native tribes, their everyday activities, culture, and hopes and dreams. There are other vacation opportunities, especially for those that like to get their hands dirty, working with local tribes and conservationists to improve and help develop preserves and National Parks.

There are so many different parks and preserves that you could take many African vacations and not see them all. There are over a dozen in Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa alone, and measures are being taken to connect some smaller park systems into Transcontinental parks, breaking down barriers, and adding connecting corridors to link them together. Even now, there are vacation opportunities for tours through these parks, both that you can do in a vehicle on your own, or by guides who are natives to the area. There are even some centers that have reopened their doors, allowing tourists a chance to see some of the most elusive endangered animals up close and personal.

For an example, in Rwanda, Parc National Des Volcans is available for Eco-tourism in a limited access. If you are not familiar with this National Park, this is the Park where Dian Fossey, 'Gorillas in the Mist,' lost her life trying to protect these gentle and majestic animals from poachers. The Dian Fossey research station has now been reopened, with the help of the Gorilla Fund International, and you can come here with a permit and see gorillas, and chimpanzees, as well as 14 other species of primates, in their natural habitat, under the guidance of park conservationists. You may even catch a rare glimpse of the endangered forest elephant. This is a once in a life time experience.

There are many different lodging accommodations in these parks and preserves. They offer many of the same amenities offered at luxury hotels, restaurants, and shopping, but also offer so much more. Where else will you be able to experience seeing wildebeests, buffalo, and antelope, as well as so many others right from the comforts of your room. These places also offer many other opportunities to see all the big animals that Africa is famous for, lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, as well as an abundance of species of birds and plant life. There are private excursions to some of the most remote locations in these parks, as well as night adventures where you can witness large and small carnivores hunting.

There are many other African Vacation opportunities as well, both inland, as well as on the coast. You can go white water rafting, fishing, and even see a variety of different marine animals, including whales, dolphins, and even great white sharks. There are 4X4 adventures, nature hikes, and many, many others.

For more information on these and other African vacations, the best place to go is online. There are an abundance of Eco-tourism websites available, for you, your family, or groups of people. Remember, because part of Africa is below the equator, the Summers there are at the end and the beginning of the year. There are some other things to remember as well. You need to book your safaris and accommodations early, many of them fill up fast and have a long waiting list. While tourists of all ages are welcome, make sure that you or you family members are going to be able to handle weather conditions, as well as physical exertion.

Real Estate Prices Up in Cuenca Ecuador: How to Still Get a Bargain When Buying a House

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

We've read that property prices have shot up 20% since Cuenca Ecuador was first named the best retirement haven in the world in 2009. We've been watching the market real close since then and property prices have most definitely increased. But now remember, you cannot go by the listed Internet prices. In other words, the price you see on the Internet is much higher than what the price of a property should really go for.

I do a lot of online research and I have noticed that many of the real estate companies for Ecuador are not even based in Ecuador-they are based in the U.S. Now, what this tells us is a big price mark up. We're not telling you how to do things but we are letting you know there are other ways of buying properties without going through a real estate company.

If you really want to go through a real estate company make sure they are actually based in the city where you are buying the house from and that no agent living in the U.S will be getting anything from the sale. You wouldn't believe how many companies and websites that are advertising Cuenca real estate, products and services but do not even live in Ecuador! Not to mention any names, but more than half of the blogs about Cuenca Ecuador are from people based in the U.S.

It's paradoxical but it is not the Ecuadorians targeting gringos that you have to worry about-it's the gringos targeting gringos! I'm very observant and I do a lot of research and know this to be quite true. Most Ecuadorians are very honest people and they would rather you buy something from them at a decent/normal price than walk away. I hope you didn't miss that. You have to be willing to walk away. There are a lot of gringos in the Ecuador real estate market right now because it's going to be hot and everyone and their grandma wants to get in on the action. It's sad and unfortunately, it's true.

As most of you know we are frugal and we like to do most things ourselves without having a middleman involved and it is mostly because of this kind of thing going on...it's how we gringos get targeted for overpriced properties. Understand this, if the website is based in the U.S someone within the U.S is getting something out of the sale of the property you just bought in Ecuador. Is that how you want to buy a home here? Remember, you are most likely to overpay if you're new to Ecuador, and Cuenca. Ms. Diligence asks: Have you lived here for at least a year before making a decision about buying in Cuenca or Ecuador in general?

About listed property prices:You can try and get a better price when you come to visit but it will still be overpriced because the listed price is way overpriced to begin with. Do you see what I'm saying? It's fun to look at houses online from the comfort of your own home, and it's nice to have a big list of houses to look at, but it will be much better to come here and then get the addresses to the houses and then go look at them. When you see a home you like, leave a note on the door in Spanish for the owner to contact you directly. You will need to know some Spanish for this.

English Speaking Real-estate vs. Spanish Speaking Real-estate

When I look in the Ecuadorian classifieds in the newspaper for homes for sale, more than half say, "Price is negotiable".Not only that, but home prices are more reasonable. Not all of them, but a lot of them are. This is because their main target is their own people-Ecuadorians targeting Ecuadorians. The best way to find a house bargain here is to not be in a hurry, meet locals, and go out and look at homes every single day. If you do this, you will know the market--then and only then should you think about an offer. You may have to hire an interpreter if you don't speak Spanish.

Another thing I want to mention is some real estate outfits here in Cuenca will charge you a fee to take you around and look at homes. Transportation costs are so cheap here, gas prices are cheap here, what are they charging you a fee for? They are charging you a fee because they know you are a gringo and don't know the area and you need them. But you do not need them, really.

It is their job to take people around and look at homes and they make their money on commissions and they should never charge you an upfront fee to go look at homes. If anything, they need you, remember that when they want to charge you a fee. If there is a particular home you want to see but do not want to pay the $75 fee for the day, get the address and hire a taxi for $3

So in a nutshell, talk to some of the friendly locals, get the house addresses and go look at them, leave a note for the owner on the door and find a bargain priced property yourself? It may take months and months of looking and doing research and walking around, but hey, it will be well worth your effort in the end. Once you have actually negotiated a price with the owner then if you need to use the real-estate company the house is listed with there will be no targeting and no agendas.

Most of the real-estate online Internet companies for Ecuador like to give you a good spiel about "how not to get targeted as a foreigner when buying property in Ecuador". It all sounds good and nice but their prices reflect differently than what they say on their website. They are in fact already targeting you as a foreigner!

A Gringo the other day was bragging all over the blogs and forums about how cheap their beach home is they just bought for $110,000. But get this, International Living brags that you can buy both a beach home and a mountain home here in Ecuador for $125,000. Not if you already paid $110,000 for your beach front home!!

See, those gringos bragging about buying a house on the beach for $110, 000 did not buy a bargain. They bought an overinflated 3 bedroom house on the beach, and only think they got a bargain because they compared it to beach front homes in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where you cannot buy a tiny lot on the beach for $110,000, let alone a three bedroom home!

A friend who lives in Mexico told us you can get a brand new 2000 square meter house built for 70k. And Mexico is more expensive than Ecuador, so how is it that we see houses advertised for twice as much in Cuenca Ecuador on the internet?

The truth is the advertised property prices are not that great here. Even the more wealthy Ecuadorians who are coming back from the U.S where they have lived and worked most of their adult life are getting targeted with gringo prices! They have not lived here so they don't know that a beach house for $110,000 should actually only be about $60,000 to $75,000 brand new! They don't know that. All they know is what they keep hearing and reading in the paper. They keep reading and hearing about this: Cuenca Ecuador best retirement haven in the world in 2011 for the third consecutive year in a row...

Kakum National Park Canopy Walk

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Kakum National Park is a Cape Coast favorite for tourists traveling to Ghana, Africa. While the park itself is nice, it is a bit disappointing that visitors are not allowed to wander around on their own or go off the main trail. However, the canopy walk is worth the trip.

Getting to Kakum National Park can be done by using the tro-tro (the Ghanian form of a minibus or shared taxi) or a private taxi. The tro-tros sometimes take a long time and there is no set schedule, so you could find yourself waiting for quite a bit. However, this option is extremely cheap and will usually cost you less than 1 Ghana Cedi. If you are looking for a more convenient option, you can pay a taxi driver a set price to take you to the park, wait for you while you explore, and then drive you back to your accommodation. Many tourists stay at the Hans Cottage Botel and if you are staying at this hotel you can hire a taxi for 40 Ghana Cedis, although I was able to talk my driver down to 30 Ghana Cedis. If you are staying closer to Cape Coast Castle, for example, at the Oasis, expect to pay a bit more.

The price for the canopy walk is 30 Ghana Cedi, however, if you are a student bring your ID (or anything that semi-resembles a student ID) and the price will be reduced to 15 Ghana Cedi. Once you pay, you will join a group and be led by a guide who will bring you through the forest and to the canopy walk.

Imagine a swinging bridge, set high above the tree tops. Because people do not walk one at a time but instead many people at one time on the bridge, expect a lot of bouncing and shaking. If you are afraid of heights, don't look down, as the combination of being high in the air on unsturdy planks of ancient looking wood is enough to make you cry. At one point, the swinging bridge shifted to the left so much that my ankle rolled and I fully expected to fall over the edge.

While scary, the experience is a lot of fun. There are also ropes that you can hold onto while you are walking. And, if you are really scared, there is a shorter, alternative route that allows you to complete the walk by crossing only 4 arial bridges.

If you are looking to experience the natural side of Ghana, I would recommend heading to the Volta region instead of Cape Coast. However, if you are looking to experience something that will get your heart racing and your palms sweating from a mixture of fear and excitement, head over to Kakum National Park and do the canopy walk.
