I do a lot of online research and I have noticed that many of the real estate companies for Ecuador are not even based in Ecuador-they are based in the U.S. Now, what this tells us is a big price mark up. We're not telling you how to do things but we are letting you know there are other ways of buying properties without going through a real estate company.

If you really want to go through a real estate company make sure they are actually based in the city where you are buying the house from and that no agent living in the U.S will be getting anything from the sale. You wouldn't believe how many companies and websites that are advertising Cuenca real estate, products and services but do not even live in Ecuador! Not to mention any names, but more than half of the blogs about Cuenca Ecuador are from people based in the U.S.

It's paradoxical but it is not the Ecuadorians targeting gringos that you have to worry about-it's the gringos targeting gringos! I'm very observant and I do a lot of research and know this to be quite true. Most Ecuadorians are very honest people and they would rather you buy something from them at a decent/normal price than walk away. I hope you didn't miss that. You have to be willing to walk away. There are a lot of gringos in the Ecuador real estate market right now because it's going to be hot and everyone and their grandma wants to get in on the action. It's sad and unfortunately, it's true.

As most of you know we are frugal and we like to do most things ourselves without having a middleman involved and it is mostly because of this kind of thing going on...it's how we gringos get targeted for overpriced properties. Understand this, if the website is based in the U.S someone within the U.S is getting something out of the sale of the property you just bought in Ecuador. Is that how you want to buy a home here? Remember, you are most likely to overpay if you're new to Ecuador, and Cuenca. Ms. Diligence asks: Have you lived here for at least a year before making a decision about buying in Cuenca or Ecuador in general?

The best way to find a house bargain here is to not be in a hurry, meet locals, and go out and look at homes every single day. If you do this, you will know the market--then and only then should you think about an offer. You may have to hire an interpreter if you don't speak Spanish.

Another thing I want to mention is some real estate outfits here in Cuenca will charge you a fee to take you around and look at homes. Transportation costs are so cheap here, gas prices are cheap here, what are they charging you a fee for? They are charging you a fee because they know you are a gringo and don't know the area and you need them. But you do not need them, really.

It is their job to take people around and look at homes and they make their money on commissions and they should never charge you an upfront fee to go look at homes. If anything, they need you, remember that when they want to charge you a fee. If there is a particular home you want to see but do not want to pay the $75 fee for the day, get the address and hire a taxi for $3

So in a nutshell, talk to some of the friendly locals, get the house addresses and go look at them, leave a note for the owner on the door and find a bargain priced property yourself? It may take months and months of looking and doing research and walking around, but hey, it will be well worth your effort in the end. Once you have actually negotiated a price with the owner then if you need to use the real-estate company the house is listed with there will be no targeting and no agendas.

Most of the real-estate online Internet companies for Ecuador like to give you a good spiel about "how not to get targeted as a foreigner when buying property in Ecuador". It all sounds good and nice but their prices reflect differently than what they say on their website. They are in fact already targeting you as a foreigner!

A Gringo the other day was bragging all over the blogs and forums about how cheap their beach home is they just bought for $110,000. But get this, International Living brags that you can buy both a beach home and a mountain home here in Ecuador for $125,000. Not if you already paid $110,000 for your beach front home!!

See, those gringos bragging about buying a house on the beach for $110, 000 did not buy a bargain. They bought an overinflated 3 bedroom house on the beach, and only think they got a bargain because they compared it to beach front homes in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where you cannot buy a tiny lot on the beach for $110,000, let alone a three bedroom home!

A friend who lives in Mexico told us you can get a brand new 2000 square meter house built for 70k. And Mexico is more expensive than Ecuador, so how is it that we see houses advertised for twice as much in Cuenca Ecuador on the internet?

The truth is the advertised property prices are not that great here. Even the more wealthy Ecuadorians who are coming back from the U.S where they have lived and worked most of their adult life are getting targeted with gringo prices! They have not lived here so they don't know that a beach house for $110,000 should actually only be about $60,000 to $75,000 brand new! They don't know that. All they know is what they keep hearing and reading in the paper. They keep reading and hearing about this: Cuenca Ecuador best retirement haven in the world in 2011 for the third consecutive year in a row...

Kakum National Park Canopy Walk

Kakum National Park is a Cape Coast favorite for tourists traveling to Ghana, Africa. While the park itself is nice, it is a bit disappointing that visitors are not allowed to wander around on their own or go off the main trail. However, the canopy walk is worth the trip.

Getting to Kakum National Park can be done by using the tro-tro (the Ghanian form of a minibus or shared taxi) or a private taxi. The tro-tros sometimes take a long time and there is no set schedule, so you could find yourself waiting for quite a bit. However, this option is extremely cheap and will usually cost you less than 1 Ghana Cedi. If you are looking for a more convenient option, you can pay a taxi driver a set price to take you to the park, wait for you while you explore, and then drive you back to your accommodation. Many tourists stay at the Hans Cottage Botel and if you are staying at this hotel you can hire a taxi for 40 Ghana Cedis, although I was able to talk my driver down to 30 Ghana Cedis. If you are staying closer to Cape Coast Castle, for example, at the Oasis, expect to pay a bit more.

The price for the canopy walk is 30 Ghana Cedi, however, if you are a student bring your ID (or anything that semi-resembles a student ID) and the price will be reduced to 15 Ghana Cedi. Once you pay, you will join a group and be led by a guide who will bring you through the forest and to the canopy walk.

Imagine a swinging bridge, set high above the tree tops. Because people do not walk one at a time but instead many people at one time on the bridge, expect a lot of bouncing and shaking. If you are afraid of heights, don't look down, as the combination of being high in the air on unsturdy planks of ancient looking wood is enough to make you cry. At one point, the swinging bridge shifted to the left so much that my ankle rolled and I fully expected to fall over the edge.

While scary, the experience is a lot of fun. There are also ropes that you can hold onto while you are walking. And, if you are really scared, there is a shorter, alternative route that allows you to complete the walk by crossing only 4 arial bridges.

If you are looking to experience the natural side of Ghana, I would recommend heading to the Volta region instead of Cape Coast. However, if you are looking to experience something that will get your heart racing and your palms sweating from a mixture of fear and excitement, head over to Kakum National Park and do the canopy walk.

Indonesia - So Much More Than Just Bali (Part 1)

We flew to Denpasar Bali from Kuala Lumpur with a Malaysia Airline special. We obtained a Visa On Arrival. Expect a long wait in line as all the planes seem to arrive at the same time. The hotel we had booked on the internet met us with a complimentary transfer. We had flown to Bali to obtain an onward flight to Flores to take a boat to see the Komodo Dragons. We spent 3 days in Bali and were less than impressed. The beaches have dirty looking sand and were covered with rubbish washed ashore. The shops all seemed to sell the same unremarkable touristy junk. We know people who rave about Bali and go there every year; we can only assume they have never been anywhere else to compare it with.

FLORES
Our hotel gave us the best airfare to Flores. We flew to Labuanbajo on Flores and stayed at the Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge. It was lovely, spacious with a pool and quiet. There is a fantastic restaurant next door. We took some walks and played soccer with the locals and bought cold drinks from a home shop. It is out of the town centre and you need to take transport (motor bikes, vans or hitch a ride on a trailer). I was starting to feeling very ill (dizzy and nauseous when I stood up) and just wanted to rest.

All travel agencies will organise your boat trip to Komodo Island to see the dragons. Shop around and compare prices against what they offer and what is included. We opted for a 2 day/1 night tour. The 3 day/2 night tours only included more snorkelling. People we met on these tours wished they had taken the 2 day/1 night tour instead. There are open deck boats versus cabin boats. We chose the open deck boat, where we slept on mattresses on the canopy covered deck. We found this was much better than being stuck in a stuffy small cabin. Compared to the cabin boats we appeared to have more deck room. Despite still not feeling well we left for the dragon islands.

KOMODO & RINCA ISLANDS
We left Labuanbajo at 8am and there was just Gavin and I, the captain, deckhand and cook on the boat. We went to Rinca Island first where we paid our National Park fee which also covers Komodo Island (so keep your ticket safe). We saw quite a few dragons in our walk with the ranger. After leaving Rinca we went to an area called Coral Gardens to go snorkelling. We have never seen so many different and beautiful coloured corals. The boat then took us to see the huge mangrove bats that leave at dusk. We dropped anchor for the night. We were joined by lots of other tour boats.

The next morning we headed to Komodo Island. The ranger took us into the forest where we came upon a huge dragon which he started to poke with a stick as he said he wanted to get better photos for us! We told him it was fine, after all these creatures eat meat! Lots of the dragons hang around the compounds especially where the kitchens are, hoping for meat scraps.

The boat took us to another island for some more snorkelling which was quite poor. We arrived back at Labuanbajo around 4pm. The Rainforest Gallery near Warburton, on the other hand, enables you to walk through the rainforest canopy via a 40-meter long observation walkway. This elevated path lets you see the 65-meter tall Mountain Ash trees, 300 to 400-year old Myrtle Beech trees, and other plant species that keep the rainforest environment alive. Finding and Seeing the Bird-Of-Paradise

The very name of this bird evokes the idea of beauty and relaxation; it is a bird that can be found only in a few places around the world, including Australia, New Guinea, and the Moluccas. Catching a glimpse of a Bird-of-Paradise is very akin to seeing a snipe in the American wilderness, but not because if their speed and size. It's because of their ingenious jungle-cameo.
